FCC, local taxes please!

FCC, local taxes please!

We are heartened to ask such a question as to why local tax is not paid anymore because we realize that the masses are no longer coerced or required to pay the traditional local council tax.

It could be recalled that when the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) assumed power, the tax issue was a celebrated one. It was not argued on the basis of unemployment or hardship, the people used to see the tax issue as a civic responsibility, not until when senior council members decided to have a field day in grazing on such funds accrued from the penury stricken masses.

It followed a disclosure by the now suspended Mayor, Herbert George Williams that council made lots of proceeds from tax collection. Part of what the gullible masses were expecting was to see the completion of the Sewa Ground Market and the reconstruction of the former Freetown City Hall, which was demolished with vital hope of reconstructing it properly with funds coming from the Freetown City Council.

On the contrary the aforementioned buildings are still standing starring at the public with lose ends.

Now the people are no more paying taxes on the grounds of arguments that the Mayor needs to account first on the proceeds he is alleged to have lined into his pocket.

Indicators are rife that since the Mayor was indicted for financial impropriety by the ACC, the FCC has given cold shoulder on the issue of tax collection – many attributing it to a cloud hanging over the Mayor. Until his fate is determined by the court the issue of tax revenue needs to be addressed and a move ahead with progression in the local revenue growth.
