Defence Minister in Ethiopia for JCM meeting

Minister of Defence and National Security retired Major, Hon. Alfred Palo Conteh (in photo) attended the just concluded Joint Coordination Mechanism (JCM) meeting held on 12th April 2012 at the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The JCM is a consultative structure chaired by the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security and mandated to undertake the following: To advise the Commissions on strategic and political issues regarding the deployment and operations of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM); to review progress made on the implementation of the military effort in Somalia, with a view to making recommendations and providing advice on how best to enhance the effectiveness of the campaign and bring it to a successful end; to provide a forum for regular consultation and dialogue among the Troop Contributing Countries (TCC), other interested countries and the Commission, among others.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss the appointment of the two Deputy Force Commanders for the AMISOM Force Headquarters in Somalia.

The meeting, which is both political and technical, was attended by TCC countries and interested TCC countries and other partners.

It is important to note that the meeting was held a month after AMISOM celebrated its 5 years of peacekeeping in Somalia.

Other members on the Minister’s delegation included: The Acting Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Samuel Williams and Colonel Mamadi Mohamed Keita, Director of Defence Training, Education and Recruitment in the Ministry of Defence.

The meeting was also attended by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Ambassador Andrew Gbebay Bangali, Mr. Amadu Koroma, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy and Mr. Jonathan Sandy, Chief and Director, Security Sector Development Office at the United Nations Political Office for Somalia based in Kenya.
