Social Welfare Ministry Ends Street Children Project

The Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s affairs have concluded a street children project worth millions of dollars in Bo, Kenema, Freetown, and Makeni.

Speaking to this Reporter in an interview, the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Brima Rogers said the project came into close due to exhaustion of its disbursed funds. The PS said the child friendly centre which used to host these children would be changed into interim care centres to serve as remand homes for juveniles.

However, Sierra Express Media is made to understand that salaries of street workers serving the project demands have still not been paid since April of last year. Mr. Rogers said they have done all the paper works but the delay in payment is a special case with the Ministry of Finance.

Following the closure of the street child project many views have expressed concerns about the future of those children in terms of shaping their fortunes with crime and behaviour education that would change their lives.
