Canon Dr. J. E. Modupe Taylor Pearce appointed Pro Chancellor of FBC

President Ernest Koroma, a former student of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and current Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, on 23rd of February 2012, appointed a veteran academic and religious leader, Canon Dr. J.E. Modupe Taylor Pearce (in photo) to the position of Pro Chancellor of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.

He replaces the outgoing Pro Chancellor Dr. Raymond Kamara, whose three- year term that is subject to renewal, expired in February, 2012.

FBC has experienced numerous challenges over the years, ranging from student unrest, various shortages, financial malfeasance and demonstrations resulting in the institution’s unflattering image and appalling moral standards that have watered down the reputation of this torch of higher learning once referred to as the Athens of West Africa. This appointment, many people we have talked to hoped, could breathe a new lease of life, ushering a new opportunity and stalling the downward spiral of FBC’s reputation, and possibly begin the process of restoration of its blemished image.

Dr. Taylor Pearce brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this coveted position. He has served the nation as teacher, principal and religious leader in various capacities nationally and internationally, where he excelled with distinction. President Koroma was one of his students the Government Secondary School in Magburaka during his teaching days. He was also a principal of that school.

FBC was founded in 1827 by the Church Missionary Society, primarily to train local clergy and teachers, who were considered role models in this society that was once tightly knit and functional. This appointment could serve as a magnet to attract academics in the Diaspora to FBC, and those who had left the University for personal and political reasons.

Its former students could see this as a golden opportunity to help raise the standards of their alma mater. Probably, this is one of the best appointments President Koroma has made in the landscape of academia. The new Pro Chancellor’s inauguration takes place March 10th 2012 at the Mary Kingsley Hall, FBC.
