It’s too early for the showdown

We know and every Sierra Leonean now knows that the year 2012 will be a decisive moment in the political life of this country.

Like we keep saying, it is the signpost for this country’s forward march to sustainable peace and stability.

In other words, it is a make or break for this beautiful land of ours. We say so because there is clear indication that the politicians will not give us (the innocent citizens) any respite when it comes to power grabbing.

They are determined more than ever to break this country’s fragile peace and young democracy just for powers sake.

Of course, the indications are crystal clear: the current war of words among political class is laying the foundation for a bloody showdown, come 2012 general elections and the actors, we mean the key players in the encounter, are the local media.

Concerned members of the public have been making and continue to make unpleasant comments about the media’s role in the simmering tension, pointing out how the media as an institution is aiding and abetting the perpetrators in what is predicted to be a no child’s play in the incoming political juggernauts.

That is why we at Sierra Express Media are sure of making the difference because we believe in objective and fair play.

We can change perceptions overnight; we can influence opinion and effect change in our society. We act as the conscience of society. We are the opinion leaders. So, what’s our problem?

We have the ultimate power at our disposal. But we can be of great liability to society if we abuse these powers and perpetuate chaos and anarchy in society just for a selfish purpose.

Let’s leave politics to the politicians and let’s remain as gatekeepers and watch dogs for our people and allow them to live in peace.

But what we are presently doing in our individual media houses is a calculated attempt to stick a wedge among our people by creating a whole of confusion in their gullible minds leaving with them no option, but rebound violently. It is too early to prepare for the ultimate.

We may not be perfect, but as an independent medium, we wish to appeal to our colleagues to temper their inflammatory news coverage with some sense of objectivity, having in mind the rugged road we have walked through to reach were we are today.

And please also allow this press put emphasis on comments of Bishop Joseph Humper on issues linking conducts of politicians to the woeful misinterpretation of passages in the truth and reconciliation report.

It is no joke that political bigwigs, in the recent past, have had pleasure hiring the services of radio stations and print media houses to say things inimical to state security.

To this, came the witting, objective, fair and upright conclusion of editorial crews of the Sierra Express to respectfully, if not patriotically tell it all to practicing media officials that politicians have been and still are, the initiators of nasty bloody serialized coups since 1967, 68, 71, 92 and 97.  We cannot afford history to repeat itself.

The year 2012 is just around the corner. We are too weary of war or bloodletting.  Let’s allow sleeping dogs to lie quietly.

This is our humble appeal to our colleagues in this bread and butter profession.
