Another PMDC minister fired

The Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs Friday 12th August, 2011  was sacked from office by President Koroma.

Even though a release put out from the office of the President did not explain reason(s) leading to the sacking of Dr. Dennis Sandy, suspicions are that All People Congress (APC) party wants all toeing the line of the PMDC leader, Charles Francis Margai, kicked out of office as Ministers.

Dr. Dennis Sandy is a member of the PMDC party and was nominated by his party to act as a Minister in the cabinet of the ruling APC party shortly after the 2007 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Up until 4:00 pm past Friday 2011, he was the substantive Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, but was sacked hours after a release from the office of the President was made public.

His sacking has ignited wider deliberation in the minds of right-thinking members of society.

Sources say that the sacking of Minister Sandy came owing to allegations that he was backing his party (PMDC) leader, Charles Francis Margai, over  recent belittling of the ruling APC party at the concluded Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) convention.

Sounding the opinion of some of President Koroma’s cabinet ministers, the Information Minister, Alhaji Ben Kargbo was caught at and this is what he said: “the sacking of Dr. Dennis Sandy has not come as a surprise to me at all.”

“Samura, it is the decisive right of the President to hire or fire any state official. And don’t forget that elections are near and that under-performing Ministers, who have no role to play, should not at all hold office.”

It is a fact nevertheless that Dr. Sandy has served as a state Minister at respective Ministries in the cabinet of President Koroma, and on number of times, has earned greater compliments for his first-class performances.

Just about two years of APC governance, there was a misunderstanding between the leadership of the PMDC and the ruling APC party nay the breakdown of what used to be a sweet wedding.

The marriage annulment between the APC and PMDC later lead to a bitter mix-up and confusion, which virtually resulted into the switching of a good number of PMDC members to the APC.

To this, came the existence of claims and counter claims from either political party, consequently bringing to light condemnations from the PMDC party leader against the APC.

Minister Sandy’s unprompted sacking apparently questioned President Koroma’s intention of weeding out upright PMDC Ministers in his cabinet.

It is no secret that persons nominated by the PMDC have had worthwhile report cards and have better performed as state Ministers than even those directly appointed by the APC.
