Ministry puts an end to illegal fishing

The Director in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Mr. Fuord Sheriff, told Sierra Express that the Government has tightened its belt to ensure that no illegal fishing is carried out in the territorial waters of Sierra Leone. Illegal fishing he said is responsible for the loss of hundreds on millions of dollars; which he added is bad for the economic and infrastructural development of the country.

Any illegal fishing vessel caught within Sierra Leone waters is a criminal offence the director stated. Sheriff at his Brookfield’s office strongly appealed to all Sierra Leoneans and foreigners to contact his Ministry for proper documentation rather than engage in illegal fishing businesses. “There are laws governing Sierra Leone, and a bitter stance will be taken against any individual or business found flouting the laws of this country,” the Director said stoutly.

The recent development is in line with the wake up call of the President of the nation on the Ministry of Fisheries to try and tap every kobo it could to help the country develop.
