Waste Management awakes from slumber

The Freetown Waste Management which has the duty of keeping the city clean is reportedly plagued with a number of unsolved difficulties.

It has reached this press that despite the Freetown City Council’s monthly financial remunerations to management of Freetown Waste Management, youths employed as daily wagers go without pay for months.

The youths, our investigation revealed, sweep rubbish disposals from the street, load on push carts and empty the same at respective waste points for disposal.

It is however disclosed that the membership of Freetown Waste Management are into serious administrative mix up owing to mismanagement.

In an interview with the new Waste Management General Manager, Zaino Parker, he said the streets have been littered due to indiscriminate dumping of rubbish by city residents.

In a bid to address this situation, the acting GM said his management had employed 65 youths (sanitary wardens), whose responsibilities are to ensure that people refrain from littering the streets with rubbish, but deposit same to dumping sites around the city.

The wardens, he continued, are currently undergoing training and will be working on a 24 hour basis.

He emphasized the need to enforce the bye-laws on waste disposal.

That the wardens will have the legal right to arrest and hand over culprit/s to the metropolitan police.

He said plans are under way to introduce a ‘house to house garbage disposal team’ which will collect garbage from houses for disposal on a daily basis for a small fee.

Should these plans be implemented properly, he said, the city will experience a sanitized climate.
