“Forest Destruction is illegitimate” SLBC Harold Williams

Environmental Journalist and representative of the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve (WAPFOR) and its Watershed, SLBC Harold Williams said obliterating forest reserves for ‘self gain’ is harmful to society.

“It is harmful to destroy the forest, but good to nurture it as people can live and make their livelihood near and around the forest,” Harold emphatically said.

He made this disclosure at a meeting to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Environmental Forum for Action and section of Environmental journalists in the enhancement and easy dissemination of environmental information.

Harold revealed to journalists that approximately 1.4 million people live directly in the forest and are mostly engaged in woodcutting for fuel and charcoal production; which according to him has resulted to the wasteful exploitation and reduction of the economic value of the forests generally.

Giving an overview of the project, he stated however that the Welf Hunger Hilfe and Environment Partners are implementing a five year project called: “conservation of the Sierra Leone Western Area Peninsular Forest Reserve and its watershed”.

He said that the project will help to reduce man’s bad activities towards the forest.

The main objective of the project, he said, is to conserve and manage the Western Area Peninsular Forest Reserve and its watershed in a sustainable manner for the benefit of adjacent population in and around the capital of Freetown, including inhabitants of villages scattered around the peninsular forests.
