Airtel enhances education in Tombo

Leading Telecommunications Services Provider, Airtel Sierra Leone has taken a giant step to actualize its ambition of being the most loved brand in the daily lives of Sierra Leoneans with the refurbishment of the REC Tombo School to an ultra modern primary school structure in Tombo, Western Rural District of Sierra Leone.

The Tombo school project, which commenced late last year, is the pilot  of the company’s Adopt-a-School programme, providing a modern day class room facilities for pupils, learning and teaching materials with lavatory facilities for the boys and girls as well as male and female teachers.

The Managing Director of Airtel Sierra Leone, Mr. RVS Bhullar, who spoke days after employees of Airtel, under its Employee Volunteers Scheme, visited the school, said the completion of the project in record time underscores the company’s commitment to providing the much-needed support for the improvement of the educational sector in the country as well as empowering children from poor homes with quality and best-in-class education.

Over 15 Employees of Airtel, through the Employee Volunteers Scheme, dressed in red branded polo shirts, were at the project site together with school authorities and parents, helping to clear, clean and prepare the school for final commissioning which took place on 12th April 2011.

An obviously elated Bhullar underlined the company’s pledge towards giving back to the people of Sierra Leone through sustained support for education at the most important level, primary level, saying that education offers children the best opportunity in life to realize their dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow.

According to him, the company’s Employee Volunteers Scheme is a testament to the fact that the Adopt-a-School initiative is a long-term commitment, revealing that Airtel will continue to provide and maintain the necessary support and care for its adopted school.

“Indeed, our employees under our Employee Volunteers Scheme will come in occasionally to support the teachers with teaching, mentoring and other academic and physical development programmes for the children,” Bhullar said.

Added to the volunteer scheme is the adopt-a-child scheme. With this, all airtel staff are in the process of sponsoring a child or more by providing a monthly minimum sponsorship fee of Le 20,000.00 to their parents for complementing the needs of their children.

According to Airtel’s Head of HR, Jestina Betts “by helping children in need stay in school, we enable them to participate not only in their own transformation, but also the transformation of their family for generations to come. By giving children who are living in poverty access to education today, they receive the tools to become self sufficient, contributing members of society tomorrow”. Jestina has consented to sustainably sponsor more than five kids.

Airtel Sierra Leone formally announced in February, this year, that it would adopt selected primary schools across the country as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme to assist the Sierra Leone government in transforming the lives of children from less privileged homes.

Under the Adopt-a-School project, the company will not only refurbish schools but will also provide school uniforms, furniture, books for the children and specialized training as well as other incentive schemes for the teachers.

The school was formally launched by Hon. Chernor Maju Bah (Member of Parliament), in the presence of Deputy Speaker of Parliament – Hon. Victor Chukuma Johnson, officials of the Western Rural District Council whose Chief Administrator served as Master of Ceremony (MC) for the launch and a host of other Government and private functionaries.
