ACC cautions staff and agents of lotto

The Northern Regional Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has cautioned all staff and Agents of the Sierra Leone State Lottery operating in the north to desist from corrupt practices and protect public revenue.

Speaking at a sensitization meeting with Staff and Agents of Sierra Leone State Lottery on Monday 18th April 2011 at LOTTO office in Makeni, Public Education Officer Mr. Al-Hassan Sesay emphasized that the Anti-Corruption Act 2008 clearly makes it an offence for anybody who fails to protect public property and revenue. He made it clear to all Agents of LOTTO that the Anti-Corruption Act is not just for Government employees but also covers the private sector.

Sesay said the Commission has the mandate to investigate all forms of corruption, no matter the amount of money or individual involved in it. He disclosed that the punishment for any offence in the Act is a fine of not less than thirty (30) million Leones or imprisonment for not less that three (3) years or both fine and prison term. Sesay therefore encouraged all Staff and Agents of LOTTO not to misappropriate public funds and involved in other forms of corruption.

Giving an overview of the Commission, Public Education Officer, Miss. Fatmata Finda Bockarie said Anti-Corruption Commission alone cannot fight corruption in the country and called on all Staff and Agents to partner with the Commission. She explained the three approaches used by the Commission in the fight against corruption which are public education, prevention and confrontation.

Miss. Bockarie made it clear that the Commission is not just there to arrest and convict corrupt individuals but also sensitizing the public on the dangers of corruption and soliciting support. She entreated all present to change their corrupt behavior, opinion, attitude and thinking for the betterment of the country.

The Public Education Officer explained the various ways of making reports to the Commission and assured them of their fullest protection of informers. She therefore urged them to report any act of corruption to the Commission and read out the mobile hotlines.

Making a statement on behalf of Sierra Leone State Lottery, Regional Marketing Representative North, Mr. Aruna Bangura  thanked  staff of ACC for sensitizing them on the offences and punishment in the 2008 Act. He assured that they will abide by the warning and continue to partner with the Anti-Corruption Commission to wipe out corruption in Sierra Leone.
