SLUDI expresses gratitude to President Koroma

FREETOWN: The Sierra Leone Union of Disability Issues (SLUDI) and the disabled in general Wednesday morning called on President Ernest Bai Koroma at State House and expressed their profound gratitude and appreciations him, for the enactment of the Disability Bill by his government.

Welcoming the organization to State House, the State Chief of Protocol, Mr. Sulay–Manah Kpukumu said despite the unscheduled visit, the President is always ready to talk to the physically challenged in spite of his busy scheduled.

Mr. Kpukumu informed SLUDI that President Koroma is the father of the nation and a leader with an understanding and concerns for the physically challenged countrywide, irrespective of regional, tribal, religious and political affiliations.

Hon. Julius Cuffie, speaking on behalf of the colleagues physically challenged referred to the moment as one of their thanksgiving days. He said it is a day that thanks and gratitude should be given to President Koroma and his government for the Disability Act, whiles noting that they also have the legal framework of disability.

Hon. Cuffie said together with his colleagues they are certain that government will make disability issues a matter of serious concerns.

The President of SLUDI Kabba Bangura thanked President Koroma whiles, observing that since 50 years back no government has acknowledge the Disability  Bill and not until now that it has been enacted by the government of President Koroma.

As Disabled, he lamented that they have suffered for far too long thus asked for the speedily establishment of the Disability Commission.

He thanked Dr Saccoh Kabia for his contribution towards the enactment of the Act.

The Union also asked for easy access to see the President and requested that they take part in the celebration of Sierra Leone’s 50th Independent Anniversary, while reiterating that President Koroma is the first Head of State that has demonstrated a sincere concern about the physically challenged.

Addressing the Disabled from the balcony of State House, President Koroma welcomed SLUDI whiles, reassuring the union that they are all Sierra Leoneans like any other citizens despite their physical plight.

He said that the All Peoples Congress is a party that understands disability issues, that is why the physically challenged are being represented in parliament. “Today”, President Koroma continued “We are all happy that the Bill has been passed into a law, through which your problems would now be addressed.

President Koroma reminded SLUDI that disability is not inability and promised that with their talent they will be given the opportunity to contribute towards national development and be trained, given official jobs and offices.
