OGI: Announcement notice

Open Government Initiative (OGI) will be facilitating a Judiciary Field Trip and Town Hall meeting to the Koinadugu district on Saturday 2nd April, 2011 at the Kabala Community Centre – Kabala to include the Prisons, Inspector – General of Police, Local Unit Commander, Solicitor-General, Master and Registrar, Law Officers Department, the Anti-Corruption Commission, Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs, Human Right Commission, Sierra Leone Bar Association and the Judiciary proper. This will be OGI’s second Field Trip to the district, the first being a Parliamentary Field Trip and Town Hall meeting held in October 3, 2009.

Before the commencement of the Saturday 2nd April, 2011 meeting, OGI will be holding a two hour “Accountability Radio discussion programme”  as per their mandate, from 8pm to 10pm with the  Regional CSOs and the wider public to reflect on the  previous Parliamentary town hall meeting of 2009. Citizens across the district and the nation at large will have the opportunity to participate and contribute to the programme through phone-ins and Text messaging. The Thursday OGI/CSO Accountability programme will be aired through major radio stations in the country and to basically evaluate what has been achieved since and what remains to be done in the Koinadugu district.

OGI’s prime objective is to create an enabling environment in which members of government (in this case the Judiciary) are brought closer to their clients to discuss issues affecting their communities and finding workable solutions to their problems. It is OGI’s belief that as stakeholders in the judiciary, the public knowledge on OGI activities is germane to the success of this initiative. Issues to be addressed at the forum will focus on:

  • Sanitary conditions in Prisons
  • Delay and duration of cases in the court system
  • Status of remand cases
  • Bush/Land and boundary disputes
  • Adherence to Human Rights in the Prison system
