James Chamanga opened the scoring 11 minutes into the first half in front of a 30,000 capacity crowd at Machava Stadium in Maputo.

Emmanuel Mayuka then wrapped up the victory with a strike deep in stoppage time.

“When my players want to win there is no stopping them,” Zambia coach Dario Bonetti said afterwards.

“This was a great result and made up for the loss in Libya last year.”

Dutch coach Mart Nooij, who came close to losing his job after a poor showing at the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola, said Mozambique had inferior strikers to Zambia.

“We tried so hard to score without success and now the squad must prepare for the return match in Lusaka in June, which I believe will be a little easier because there will be more room to attack.”

Zambia now go top of Group C with six points while Mozambique are down in third with four.

The group’s other match between Libya and Comoros takes place on Monday in Bamako.
