Sierra Leone suffer first defeat

An incredible afternoon of frayed nerves for the Mena’s in Niamey coming from behind to thrash Sierra Leone 3-1 on Sunday to stay second in Group G in the race to reach Africa Nations Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon 2012.

Their 3-1 win over Sierra Leone keeps them as strong contenders with South Africa to reach the Afcon 2012; this is a back-to-back win for the Mena’s.

It was the visitors ‘Sierra Leone’ who took the lead in Niamey from Mohamed Bangura, 23 minutes into the game scoring the first goal, raising hope amongst Sierra Leoneans and soccer agog fans.

Sierra Leone took the lead midway through the first half, and looked as though they would hold on for a great win entering the second 45minutes on the front foot, still maintaining their one goal lead before the host got their equaliser.

The surprised Niger side that defeated the African Nations Cup holder Egypt rejuvenated their side to storm Sierra Leone with three goals in the final 15 minutes to seal victory and maintain their fine home record in Niamey.

Niger is one point behind South Africa from three matches, while Sierra Leone have two points from three, while Egypt have managed just a single point from their three games.
