President Koroma assures mining companies

President Ernest Bai Koroma Saturday graced the coronation of the Kono District Chairlady, Madam Diana Konomanyi in Koidu Town, where he assured mining companies in the country of his government’s obligation to agreements insofar as they relate to his people.  (Photo: HE President Ernest Bai Koroma)

He praised some existing agreements, apparently referring to recent mining licenses and lease agreements, between the government and mining companies which he said were laudable and called on mining companies to respect them.

He, however, warned community people in mining areas not to take the laws into their own hands by attacking company facilities whenever they feel aggrieved. He noted that such a development was equal to indiscipline that undermines the Mines and Minerals Act of 2009.

Being an Act to consolidate and amend the law on mines and minerals, the law seeks to promote local and foreign investment in the mining sector by introducing new and improved provisions for exploration, mine development and marketing of minerals and mineral secondary processing for the benefit of the people of Sierra Leone.

The parliamentary corollary was a reviewed set of laws now governing mining licenses that were given to companies like African Minerals (SL) Limited after an overwhelming legislative approval in 2010.
