Teachers Union Chair calls for school dress code

The newly elected Sierra Leone Teacher’s Union chairman for the Western Area, Ahmed A. Jalloh has complained against the manner in which school going kids now dress and said they resemble any psychopath or inner city hoodlum in New York.

Mr. Jalloh lamented against the way and manner in which the accustomed dress code in schools has been disregarded and said this has created a negative impact on the development of our educational system in the country.

The SLTU Western Area chairman blamed parents for allowing their school going children to dress in whatever way they choose, claiming it is the fashion of the day, and said parents who show no interest in the manner in which their wards dress are contributing to the backwardness of education in the country.

On the issue of teachers, Mr. Jalloh pointed out that teachers need to play a pivotal role to be able to change the ugly trend in the educational system in the country. “Teachers should ensure that their orders are obeyed and should never turn a blind eye whenever they see pupils in dresses and clothing contrary to the dress codes.”

The chairman was addressing a cross section of over forty-five principals and senior teachers as well as school representatives within the Western Area of Freetown.

Mr. Jalloh called on heads of schools to introduce stringent regulations which will ensure that the decorum and order once prevailing in schools is once again introduced in the country.

Making reference to the conditions of teachers, Jalloh called on government to ensure that the welfare, conditions of service and transport allowance for teachers in the country is updated to meet the challenges of the time. “All Sierra Leoneans are eager for a very good academic performance in school in the country, but this can only be achieved if teachers are provided with inspiring and morale boosting salaries and other emoluments.

Mr. Alie Musa a school representative in his contribution said the educational system in the schools is dying out slowly because of slack rules and regulations and the inability of the Minister of Education to show commitment and respect for teachers and other educationists. “Until an urgent action is taken to advert the situation, the end product may not yield a good fruit for the development of the educational system in the country,” Mr. Musa said.

A female representative Ms. Aminata S.Morlai said the issue of the SLTU has not been too pleasing to many teachers as they have been “lackadaisical in dealing with the affairs of teachers in the whole country.”

“As a matter of fact we hope that the current executive may have something different and unique so as to push the affairs of the union further,” Aminata Morlai reiterated.
