Police Brutality Scares Public Trust

The Sierra Leone Police, emblemed as ‘Force for Good,’ has lost public trust due to brutal and reckless conducts of some of its personnel.

Recently, a newspaper editor working for the Concord Times was held hostage by gang of police officers attached to Kissy Police station.

His beating up, we are told, came shortly after he was asked to mediate misunderstanding between family members.

First hand information has shown how Inspector Barrie and team used offensive weapons against an unarmed Editor Moses.

Editor Moses, who now respond to treatment, sustained wounds on the head, back and other part of his body.

Information received from residents of Kissy Mess Mess revealed that the conduct of Inspector Barrie and others was wrong and uncalled for.

“How can a whole police Inspector behave like any rebel? Inspector Barrie was very arrogant to Editor Moses,” says an eyewitness.

“Of course, handful of OSD and general duty police, in our presence, joined Inspector Barrie to manhandle poor Moses,” he continued.

It could be recalled that the police during Acha Kamara’s tenure of office witnessed the extreme overindulgences of senior and junior officers into issues of criminal and brutal bearings.

Views of persons interviewed say Munu’s recent appointment as police IG was mentally pictured as a step in the right direction.

It was anticipated that with the appointment of Francis Munu as Inspector General, the reckless and unwitting conducts of riff raff police officers will end.

Although Editor Moses is said to have made a formal complaint at Kissy police, executive of Sierra Leone Association of Journalists have been informed and will soon come out with a statement.

Police officers are not rebels and must not be seen behaving unreasonably as in the case of Inspector Barrie and team.

As police men, they are by law to act as respectable civil servant, protect the lives and property of peaceful citizens and maintain national order.

Inspector Barrie and others must be made to face the full force of the law.
