Four Salone Peace Keepers die in Dafur

Report reaching the Ministry of Defense discloses that six Sierra Leonean Military Personnel serving as Peace Keepers in Dafur, Sudan were involved in a gruesome lorry accident leaving four dead and two seriously injured.

The United Nations Vehicle with registration number UNAMID 500023 crashed during an escort  patrol duty accompanying the UANMID Deputy Joint Special Representative to Sudan Mr. Mohamed Yunis to a displace camp in Kalma, Southern Sudan.

The four Sierra Leonean service men who lost their lives, Lt.SM Lebbie SL.1247, RSLF 18181241 Sergeant Koroma E, Lance Corporal Bangura A and RSLF Lance Corporal Marah B have all been taken to the UN central morgue in Darfur with the two surviving others RSLAF 18171947 Lance Corporal Bangura A. and RSLF 18181242 Lance Corporal Momoh G. presently under intensive medical at the Level III Hospital in Khartoum.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Defense Headquarter on Monday 2nd August, 2010 Brigadier General Robert Y. Koroma, Deputy Chief of Defense Staff and Defense Spokes Person disclosed that the family of the diseased have been informed accordingly and that their bodies are expected to arrived soonest at the Freetown International Airport. He also added that the deceased would be buried at the Military Funeral Ground at Lumley with all the accompanying military honors.

He continued to note that the driver of the ten ton vehicle attempted to run way but he had been apprehended by the Sudanese Police and a joint investigation unit had been set up to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Sierra Express has learnt that the country is about to deploy a second batch of Sierra Leonean Peace Keepers in Dafur known as the Sector Reconnaissance Company II (SRC) that are said to have completed training last July and ready to deploy no later than August 23rd Sierra Express has learnt.

The Sector Reconnaissance Company I from Sierra Leone presently deployed at Dafur according to findings are charged with the responsibility to protect key points and undertake VIP escort, one of which culminated into a gruesome accident. Earlier the contingent lost a female officer Lance Corporal Adama Kamara on July 2, 2010; died of natural causes according to reports from the Ministry of Defense in Sierra Leone.
