Teachers express regret over closure of 6-3-3-4

Several teachers have expressed concern over the government’s decision to scrap the 6334 school system, saying it will not be in the interest of developing the educational standard in the country.

“I personally prefer the 6-3-3-4 System and to tell you the truth I do not see how the government can go about reversing this system,” said Mohamed Juana in Kenema.

“The 6-3-3-4 Education system in Sierra Leone is almost at the verge of becoming a success, and it is just left with the government to fill up the gaps in the schooling as what is happening in Nigeria and The Gambia where a Youth Service Scheme complements the policy,” said a senior teacher in a Freetown school who asked not to be named.

The authorities have not been able to develop the system because they do not have the initiative and the will to put it into practice, that is why the whole system has come to a standstill,” he said.

Another educationist in a telephone interview said he is “disappointed with the APC administration for failing to bring benefit to the people of this country, rather than just get tired of the system out of lackadaisical attitudes on the part of those in authority.”

“The improvement and development of this country lies in the hands of each and every Sierra Leonean, but for people in authority to just take it upon themselves to put a stop to issues that need each and every one’s input and contribution.  It is not good for people in authority to take it upon themselves to put a stop to it simply because they are in the seat of power.”

The decision taken by some Government functionaries to destroy the 6-3-3-4 system is rather unfortunate and a waste of energy and time. “Can we talk of continuity or is it a kind of vendetta to target and destroy the good work of fellow politicians and is this the democracy we are clamoring to nurture?” he asked.
