FCC, an embarrassment to the city

Scores of complaints by peace loving Sierra Leoneans have reached this medium about the Freetown City Council’s new strategy of collecting the 2010 local tax.

According to residents of Freetown, the strategy is embarrassing. They wonder why council in its wisdom decided to remove the Accountant General from deducting the Le 5,000 from salaries of all civil servants?

They pointed out that the habit of stopping moving vehicles along major streets to check for local tax does not only cause unnecessary traffic holdups and eat on the precious time of workers and business people alike. Residents say they are willing to pay the tax as that is their civic responsibility towards nation building. They however warned council to be consistent in the issuance of the next local tax as majority of tax payers spoken said their 2009 tax receipt should expire in September 2010, yet they have been forced to buy another before the expiry date.

Speaking to one of our reporters, the tax payers noted that the council should embark on tangible projects rather than projects that just exist in black and white. They further blame the council for the non-performance of the Freetown Waste Management Company for not paying salaries on time to workers which is responsible for piles of garbage in the city.
