Man commits suicide over rape accusation

Forty-six years old Emmanuel Allen residing in Mano Dasseh village in Moyamba District on 13th Tuesday October 2009, drank poison and died after he was accused of having raped a six year old girl, and rendered her unconscious as a result of the act.

Peter Songa, a resident of the village said Emmanuel Allen was the main suspect as he had always been known to be playing with the child, claiming he is going to groom her for his son.

“Emmanuel has always been coming around the child’s mother, claiming he is encouraging and supporting the child to be a future wife for his son Joseph Allen, not knowing that he has different intention for the child,” Songa said.

According to neighbours, this past Tuesday, the girl’s mother went to their farm for harvesting leaving the child with the grandmother.

Emmanuel Allen is said to have later come to the house where he convinced the grandmother to hand over the child to him. He immediately took her to an unknown location with promises of giving her sweets and there he reportedly had sex with her, resulting in the child losing consciousness.

As a result of uncontrollable bleeding, Emmanuel is said to have fled in alarm, leaving the child in the bush.

The child was later discovered by a farmer who immediately raised the alarm.

Emmanuel was later apprehended in the bush and brought to the village chief where it was decided that he should be kept in custody till the next day when he will be handed over to the Moyamba police.

While in custody, Emmanuel is said to have drank a poisonous substance which caused him to collapse and become unconscious.

He was immediately rushed to the community health centre in the village where he eventually died after proclaiming to medical assistants that he had committed suicide because of the shame and the scandal.

The child is still under going medical treatment in the Moyamba Government Hospital.
