YLSL: ‘more needs to be done to tackle youth unemployment’

Young Leaders-Sierra Leone (YLSL) has called on the government to do more to tackle youth unemployment in the country.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the government understands that youth unemployment is a massive problem,” said YLSL president Unisa Dizo-Conteh (in photo).  I’ve got no doubt also that the government is making efforts, however, more needs to be done to tackle youth unemployment.”

He said that “young people are full of creativity, but due to sometimes failure to implement good policies, such creativity, which could hugely stimulate rapid and sustained economic growth, is sadly destroyed.

Reacting to a loan of $12m granted to Sierra Leone, which the government has said $5m of that will be used for the National Youth Commission, Dizo said   “this is money, if utilised properly, will help, in a way, to begin to address the needs of the youth.”

“Governments very often see youth as an economic burden and they very often avoid doing more to understand the boarder picture.”  Dizo said: “they should see youth as economic partners, rather than a burden.”

He said “very high youth unemployment, just like what is seen in Sierra Leone, is a national emergency that requires urgent steps to be taken”
