Dismay and Disappointment

Since the subject of Pensions for former Presidents, Vice Presidents and Ministers came up I had been waiting anxiously for my monthly pension. I was aware that it would not be much but the expected regularity of it was reassuring. I could plan ahead. Over the weekend I learnt from one of my former colleagues that they were already receiving their monthly entitlement regularly. With that knowledge and with great indignation I approached a cool and very courteous Kebe Kouroma the Acountant-General who immediately disarmed me with his politeness in answer to my query on not receiving my pension like my other former colleagues. Kouroma was cool as he explained that although I was appointed Seniour Adviser with all my former privileges attached after leaving the Foreign office I DID NOT CARRY THE TITLE OF MINISTER and therefore I did not qualify for a state pension under the State Pensions’ Act. I was numb for a few minutes but thanked Kebe Kouroma for his help and walked out.

Looking forward to my imagined arrears I had planned what my priorities would be, among them was the replacement of my “Double Sim” mobile phone which some unkind person had borrowed from me without my permission in Church. Well readers there goes my reward for 9 years continued and I hope, dedicated service to my country. It is hard to take and I might petition my “distinguished nephew” on the matter. It is a real disappointment but meanwhile I am sure my nephew will soon replace that telephone while he waits for my humble petition. After all what are distinguished nephews for if not to INDULGE 80 YEAR OLD “UNCLES!” particularly as he did not attend my 80th birthday Thanksgiving Service.

I must apologise to Lans Gberie whom I have admire and liked for a long time. I had assumed from the account of his meeting with Ban Ki Moon that it was at the famous news conference. The quotations were not in order but some of the things the Secretary-General was supposed to have said.
