African Minerals donates Le 6 million to 16 schools

Leading iron ore mining company in the country, African Minerals Limited -Sierra Leone, has donated a total of Le 6 million to sixteen schools in the three operational areas in the Tonkolili District, North of Sierra Leone, for the celebration of the Day of the African Child.

The donation started in Mabontho in the Kafe Simiria Chiefdom where African Minerals’ social and community coordinator, Desmond Doherty informed newsmen that the purpose of the donation was in line with this year’s celebration, adding that last year the company selected one school in the district for the celebration and provided them with food, learning materials and later took them to the mining site at Ferrengbeya.

“As a company, we have decided this time round to give schools in the chiefdom headquarters a total sum of two million as our own help in celebrating this day,” Mr. Doherty stated.

While receiving the money on behalf of the four schools in Mabontho town, the Principal for the Bondoh Kaira Junior Secondary School, Father Paul Mansaray thanked African Minerals for their support in improving education in that part of the country.

Father Paul reiterated that only good investors like African Minerals can think of investing on education; noting that the company has awarded scholarships to students in their chiefdom which, according to him, was a great help to parents. “By your demonstration” he added, “this effort will not go in vain.” He urged parents to ensure that their children are in school.

A similar donation was done in Bumbuna in the Kalansongoia chiefdom where five schools benefited from Le 2 million.

The donation exercise continued to Bendugu in the Samaya Bendugu Chiefdom in Tonkolili district where the company received a warm welcome climaxed by the sharing of kola nut and water from the people and Paramount Chief of the chiefdom.

During the welcoming ceremony, the teachers and community people in Bendugu pleaded with the company to link them with the rest of the country by constructing their road as most of them are farmers and that most times their produces get perished before reaching the market.
