Zain still No. 1 for network capacity and availability

Zain in Sierra Leone, formerly Celtel launched its services in Sierra Leone in September 2000 and was part of Celtel International. Zain was Sierra Leone’s subsidiary of African multinational telecommunications company and has so far been a success story to the peopling of Sierra Leone. The company indirectly played an active part in assisting both the government and the British Military to communicate in a way that had never been possible in a bid to end the war. To date, Zain commands the highest network coverage country wide, rendering communication support to development organizations (Local & International) working in very remote communities in driving the country positively towards its development agenda. The driving force behind the provision of the most innovative and reliable network to Sierra Leoneans is the network capacity and availability.

Zain has been growing over the years in traffic and more recently data. To ensure that all our voice and data services are adequately handled with carrier class quality of service, Zain upgraded its main transmission backbone to the provinces. The upgrade was done on a number of sites. It was done through the North and up to the South. Both of these regions have been joined together to form a ring which increases network resilience exponentially.

Due to the growth of their network, it was deemed necessary to upgrade from the old technology PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) to SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy). SDH is a newer and better technology over PDH. Some of the benefits offered among many are as follows:

  • Higher Capacity
  • Ease of traffic protection/redundancy (Improving Availability)

The company had grown from one rendering basic telephony to another fully sophisticated in data and voice services and taking all these services to the International stage. The Zain Mobile Network is changing the way many people live and work too. It is making business easier and more efficient. Further, it helps families and communities to stay in touch, and individuals to feel connected.

In a bid to have their network availability in every corner of Sierra Leone , Zain installed state of the art SDH Radio equipment and Multiplexers to ensure that present needs are catered for and there is the possibility of flexibly upgrade and to handle all future upgrade plans and technologies. Zain is committed to ensuring our subscribers are always served by state of the art equipment and receive premium service.

Zain Sierra Leone has announced the establishment of toll free emergency numbers to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to give Sierra Leoneans easy access to the emergency services. The company has also donated special handsets to the SLP to enable them respond speedily to emergency calls from communities in which they operate. In this regard, Zain fully supports the Internal Ministry’s commitment to maintaining the health and safety of our citizens.”

A toll-free, Freecall or Freephone number is a special telephone number, in that the called party is charged the cost of the calls by the telephone carrier, instead of the calling party. A toll-free number is assigned from a special dialing prefix range where all calls to those prefixes are free to the caller. But in this case, the SLP is not charged by Zain for receiving calls on these six lines.

Mr. Kelvin Kellie, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications for Zain Sierra Leone said, the company recognized that it was important for its customers to have quick and easy access to the emergency services at no cost to them. He also acknowledged the importance of the work of the Police and said Zain was happy to assist.
